Picnic, only established in 2015, is the number 1 in the Top 250 Scale-Ups 2019. This list was presented earlier today by the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship (ECE), Rotterdam School of Management – Erasmus University (RSM) and nlgroeit. Picnic created 1697 new jobs and grew the fastest between 2015 and 2018. Jitse Groen, founder of Takeaway.com (winner of last year), and academic director Prof. Dr. Justin Jansen handed out the Golden Grower (‘’Gouden Groeier’’ in Dutch) to the co-founder of Picnic Michiel Muller during the yearly event of Nlgroeit Business Boost Live in Ahoy Rotterdam.  Together, the Top 250 scale-ups created more than 40.000 jobs (in FTEs) in the period from 2015 to 2018, the Top 10 alone created 21.675 jobs.

About the Top 250
The Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship monitors and investigates in collaboration with Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University fast-growing companies in the Netherlands. Every year we present the results of this in the Scale-up Dashboard, which is made of different data sources, own research and already existing data bases. The Top 250 Scale-ups is based on the Scale-up Dashboard and is published in collaboration with nlgroeit. The research is led by Prof. Dr. Justin Jansen, Academic Director of Erasmus Center for Entrepreneurship and Professor of Corporate Entrepreneurship at RSM.

Criteria
The Top 250 Scale-ups differentiates itself from other lists by its focus on growth in employees and turnover, instead of only focusing on turnover like other lists often do. The Top 250 Scale-ups is an overview of fast-growing companies (scale-ups), they:

  • have at least 10 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) and / or at least 5 million euros in turnover at the start of the measurement period;
  • achieved an average growth of at least 20% in FTE and / or revenue in three consecutive years in the 2015-2018 period.

The Top 250 Scale-ups is made up of the 250 Dutch companies that grew the most in turnover and/or employees during the period 2015 until 2018. The Top 10 is based on companies that created the most jobs during this period and showed the highest average annual growth in employees.

Top three
This year, Picnic scored highest on the combination of the amount of jobs created and the relative growth in employees. The second place is taken by last year’s winner Takeaway.com. They created 2272 jobs since 2015, with an average growth of 88%. The third place is for Rituals with 2880 new jobs and a relative growth of 38%.
