How to make innovation a continuous process within your organisation and department?

The programme in one minute:

The Essentials of Innovation Leadership programme supports participants to understand and elevate innovation within their organisation to a higher level focusing on the structure for innovation and the culture. During the programme, you’ll learn the fundamentals of driving innovation; how to shift from ad-hoc to systemic innovation, what (in)visible factors within the organisation influence the succes of innovation and what (personal) leadership skills are needed to support both yourself and others in their innovation efforts.

Learning Objectives

During this programme, you will:

  • learn how to set innovation goals and fitting processes, and to get the most out of techniques such as lean startup and design thinking;
  • gain skills in how to assess and build effective entrepreneurial teams;
  • develop the understanding and the capability to create urgency and a social movement for innovation, i.e. to involve, engage and excite others;
  • develop the capability to facilitate cultural change and influence senior leadership behaviour.

The programme Essentials of Innovation Leadership is also a component of the Diploma Programme: Leading Innovation Excellence.

This programme is specially designed for (innovation) professionals that have experience with demonstrating internal entrepreneurship. Participants have experience with innovation, strategic renewal and/or (digital) transformation projects and want to elevate both themselves and their organisation (200 FTE>) from any disciplines to the next level.

Programme details

The programme consists of a dynamic mix of masterclasses, personal training, real-life business cases and learning how to master the use of the latest innovation tools and techniques so you can drive innovation in your organisation. This three-day programme will focus on the following innovation topics:

Day 1: (Human) Resources

An organisation’s most important resource for innovation are its people, thus we will go in depth about Human Resources. After this day you will;

  • Come to understand the roles and traits of successful Innovation Drivers;
  • Develop the capability to assess and build effective entrepreneurial teams;
  • Develop the capability to assess and build effective social networks for
    innovation;
  • Draw upon the results from the ECE Entrepreneurship Scan to understand what it takes to build an ambidextrous leadership style.

Day 2: Processes

Excellent innovation requires systematic processes and governance systems to
guide (portfolios of) individual projects and to move beyond ad hoc projects:

  • Draw upon the results from the ECE Entrepreneurship Scan to understand the characteristics of ambidextrous innovation governance systems to explore and build innovations;
  • Develop the capability to set innovation goals and fitting processes, and to get the most out of techniques such as lean startup and design thinking;
  • Work in a small team to analyze and evaluate an innovation leader’s real-life case.

Day 3: Values

A sustainable innovation competence requires organisational cultures based
on innovation and entrepreneurship values. To stimulate and integrate desired
behavioral change in your organisation, you will:

  • (Real-life case continued) Learn from the innovation leader (in person) about the difficulties to develop the broader innovation capability and culture of the organisation;
  • Develop the understanding and the capability to create urgency and a social movement for innovation, i.e. to involve, engage and excite others;
  • Develop the understanding and the capability to facilitate cultural change and influence senior leadership behavior.

Top academics from RSM and international partner universities are brought together to lead this programme, which has been developed by the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship in collaboration with industry-leading innovation professionals from organisations such as DSM and ING. These professionals will also act as facilitators during the programme.

Prof. Dr. Justin Jansen

Professor Corporate Entrepreneurship

Justin Jansen is professor of corporate entrepreneurship at RSM. His award-winning research and publications provide new perspectives into the roles of leadership, start-ups, organisational ambidexterity, corporate entrepreneurship, and new developments to improve long-term viability and performance. Justin is scientific director of the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship, and is on the editorial board of several academic publications.

Ferdinand Jaspers is programme director at the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship. His teaching and consultancy activities focus on innovation leadership. Based on his expertise at the intersection of strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship, he teaches courses, masterclasses and boot camps on corporate entrepreneurship, innovation excellence and entrepreneurial culture. He holds a PhD from RSM.

Dr. Magdalena Cholakova

Academic Director

Magdalena Cholakova is an associate professor of strategy & entrepreneurship in the Department of Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship at RSM. Her research interests include entrepreneurial learning & early-stage idea validation and institutional complexity & strategic renewal.

Tom J.M. Mom is a professor of Strategic Growth and Implementation in the department of Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship at RSM. His research interests include new business development & corporate growth, ambidexterity, strategic renewal, and strategy execution.

Angelique Plugge

Innovation Driver

Angelique Plugge is one of the initiators of the Leading Innovation Excellence Programme. As a guest lecturer, Angelique inspires our participants by providing her extensive expertise gained from working and learning in corporate innovation for multiple years. She now started her own company Xploremore where she uses her experience in innovation excellence and business model innovation to support others.

Arjan Rensma

Sustainable Innovation Driver

Arjan Rensma is Innovation Excellence Manager at DSM and practitioner/coach in our innovation programmes. Teaching is the best way to learn and therefore he loves to share and learn from the participants.

Ad van Dongen

Innovation Driver

Ad van Dongen is practitioner coach in the programme because he wants to share his experiences as a corporate innovator at ING. Being an innovator in a large company is often a roller coaster, with ups and downs, but also great fun. His experience can help others to enjoy the ride as well. Even though leading innovation has many aspects, his role in the programme is to share his learnings on how to keep a holistic approach when you embed innovation in to your organisation.

The ‘Essentials of Innovation Leadership’ is taught in English, and is delivered on three consecutive days at the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship in the centre of Rotterdam. The next programme will run on: October 2, 3 and 30, 2023. Optional kick-off session: June 29, 2023. In-company possible anytime on request and on the basis of availability.

Sessions start at 09:00, but you can join us each morning from 08:30 for a light breakfast. The day ends at 17:30. The programme has one day with a late finish at 20:00, which includes dinner.

The fee for this programme is € 3,500 excl. 21% VAT (€ 4.235 incl. 21% VAT) for the three-day programme, which includes the ECE Corporate Entrepreneurship Scan, all course materials, refreshments, lunches and one group dinner.

What are the effects of COVID-19 on the programme?

Due to the strict measures concerning COVID-19 that are in place until at least January 19, we unfortunately have to alter the programme setting. We propose to have two days online till 14:00, a one-on-one coaching session and the intention for at least one full day offline at a later date in March if possible. We propose the following schedule:

  • Monday 18 January 09:00 – 14:00 through Zoom
  • Tuesday 19 January 9:00 – 14:00 through Zoom
  • 25 January – 3 February: one-on-one coaching sessions.
  • 1st of March –  09:00 – 17:00 at Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship in Rotterdam (if possible – further details will be shared at a later point)

How much time will I need to spend on this programme?

All programmes consist of 3 days in class. Next to these, there will be some preparatory work for each programme, and optional webinars. Furthermore, the participants may opt to develop and execute their own Real-life Impact Project during the programme with coaching from top academics and industry-leading practitioners.

What is the maximum number of participants that can join the programme?

The limit amount of participants is 15 as we seek for a highly interactive learning environment.

What kind of certification will I receive when I graduate from this programme?

After completing this programme you will receive a proof or participation. The programme is also a component of the Diploma Programme: Leading Innovation Excellence. After completing the full diploma programme, you will receive the academic Innovation Driver certificate of the Erasmus University.

In what language will the programme be held?

The Essentials of Innovation Leadership is the only programme which is delivered in both English and Dutch. All other programmes are taught in English. Each programme is delivered on three consecutive days at the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship.
